The Ukrainian Orthodox Church traces its roots to the very founding moment of Orthodox Christianity among the Slavic peoples, the Baptism of Kievan Rus in 988 under Saint Vladimir the Great, which took place in the Dnieper River in the city of Kiev, the mother of all Russian cities. Ukraine is therefore the birthplace of Orthodox Christianity among the Eastern Slavs and the land from which the faith spread to Russia, Belarus and beyond. The Kiev Caves Monastery, the Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra, founded in 1051, is one of the holiest and most ancient monastic sites in the entire Orthodox world, housing the incorrupt relics of over a hundred saints in its famous caves. Ukraine has produced extraordinary saints including Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves, the founders of the Kiev Caves Monastery, Saint Barbara of Kiev, and the countless martyrs of the 20th century who died for their faith under Soviet persecution, known as the New Martyrs of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Orthodox people have maintained their faith through extraordinary historical trials and continue to express it with deep devotion, rich liturgical tradition and a vibrant monastic life.
