Theotokos of Vladimir Black Coffee Mug

The wonderworking icon of the Theotokos of Vladimir is the most sacred and venerated icon in the entire history of Russia and one of the greatest treasures of Orthodox Christian civilisation. According to tradition the icon was painted by the Holy Evangelist Luke himself on a board from the table at which the Holy Family ate in Nazareth, and the Most Holy Theotokos blessed it with the words let the grace of my Son and mine be with this icon. It was brought from Constantinople to Kiev around 1131 and later transferred to Vladimir, from which it takes its name. The icon is of the type called Eleusa, meaning tender love or loving kindness, depicting the Most Holy Theotokos pressing her cheek tenderly against the cheek of the Christ child. It is credited with saving Moscow from the Mongol invasion of Tamerlane in 1395 and from other invasions, and is celebrated in June, July and September. It now rests in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
