Theotokos of Tikhvin Coffee Mug

The wonderworking icon of the Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most beloved and celebrated miracle-working icons of the Russian Orthodox Church, venerated throughout the Orthodox world for its extraordinary history and the countless miracles worked through it. According to tradition the icon, of the type called Hodegetria meaning She who shows the way, appeared miraculously in the sky above the Tikhvin River in Russia in 1383, moving from place to place before finally coming to rest in the town of Tikhvin where a church and later a great monastery were built in its honour. The icon is credited with protecting Tikhvin from Tatar and Swedish invaders and with countless healings. During the Second World War the icon was taken to the West to protect it and spent decades in Chicago before being solemnly returned to Russia in 2004. Its feast day is celebrated in July.
