Theotokos of Kazan Coffee Mug

The wonderworking icon of the Theotokos of Kazan is one of the most beloved and venerated icons in the entire Russian Orthodox Church and one of the most famous icons in all of Orthodoxy. The icon appeared miraculously in 1579 in the city of Kazan in Russia, discovered by a young girl named Matrona after the Most Holy Theotokos appeared to her in a dream and directed her to a specific location where the icon was found buried beneath the ruins of a burned house. The icon has been associated with countless miracles throughout Russian history, most famously the deliverance of Moscow from the Polish invasion in 1612 and the victory of Russian forces at the Battle of Kazan. A copy of the icon accompanied Russian forces throughout many historical conflicts. The feast of the Kazan icon is celebrated in August and November, the latter being a national holiday in Russia known as National Unity Day.
