Saints Peter and Fevronia Framed Canvas Icon
Prince Peter of Murom and the peasant woman Fevronia are remembered together in one of the most beloved love stories within Russian hagiography, beginning when Peter, suffering from a severe affliction that physicians of his court could not heal, was cured by Fevronia, a woodcutter's daughter known for her wisdom and skill in healing, on the condition that he marry her once well. Though he initially hesitated to honour this promise on account of her humble birth, his illness returned until he kept his word, and the two were married despite considerable opposition from the noblemen of Murom, who resented having a peasant woman elevated to govern alongside their prince. The couple endured a period of exile when the nobility attempted to drive Fevronia away, yet they were recalled once chaos engulfed the city in their absence, after which they ruled together with a wisdom and piety that earned them lasting devotion among their people. In their final years they each entered monastic life, taking the names David and Euphrosyne, and tradition holds they prayed to be granted death at the same hour, a prayer that was answered, their bodies found united in burial the following day even after church authorities had at first insisted on separating them, a final and lasting sign of the union the Church now holds up as a model of marriage as a calling shared equally and faithfully across every difference of rank.
“Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?” (James 2:5)
O holy Peter and Fevronia, who didst remain faithful to one another despite every opposition, intercede for us and for our own marriages, that fidelity and love may overcome whatever divisions threaten to separate us. Amen.
