Saint Valentine Coffee Mug
Saint Valentine of Rome is venerated in the Orthodox Christian Church as a holy martyr who gave his life for Christ in the 3rd century. According to tradition, Valentine was a priest in Rome who continued to minister to persecuted Christians and perform marriages for Christian couples at a time when the Emperor Claudius II had banned such unions, believing that unmarried men made better soldiers. He was arrested, imprisoned and martyred around 269 AD for his faithfulness to Christ and his love of neighbour. In the Orthodox Church he is venerated not merely as a symbol of romantic love but as a true martyr who demonstrated the highest form of love, the willingness to sacrifice one's life for God and for others. His feast day is celebrated in August in the Orthodox calendar.
"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12)
O holy martyr Valentine of Rome, faithful servant of Christ who laid down thy life in love for God and neighbour, intercede before the Lord for all who seek to love truly and purely in the spirit of the Gospel. Amen.
