Saint Theodore Tiron Black Coffee Mug

Saint Theodore the Recruit, known in the Orthodox Church as Theodore Tiron, the word Tiron meaning recruit or new soldier, is one of the most venerated and beloved of all the holy military martyrs of the Orthodox Church, celebrated throughout the entire Orthodox world for his courage, his faith and his particularly close connection to the season of Great Lent. Born in Euchaita in Pontus in Asia Minor, Theodore was a new recruit in the Roman army when the Emperor Maximian issued his persecution of Christians around 306 AD. He refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods and was arrested. During his imprisonment he prayed and sang hymns continuously and endured torture before being burned alive in a furnace, commending his soul to God with great peace. He is celebrated with particular solemnity on the first Saturday of Great Lent because of a miracle connected with his memory. When the Emperor Julian the Apostate ordered the food markets of Constantinople to be contaminated with blood sacrificed to idols during the first week of Lent, Saint Theodore appeared in a vision to the Patriarch and warned him, directing the faithful to eat boiled wheat, kolyva, instead. His feast day is celebrated in March.
