Saint Theodore the General, known in the Orthodox Church as Theodore Stratelates, the word Stratelates meaning general or commander of armies, is one of the most celebrated holy military martyrs of the Orthodox Church, venerated alongside Saint Theodore Tiron as a great warrior saint and intercessor for soldiers, military commanders and all who face the powers of evil. Born in Euchaita in Pontus, he rose to become a general in the Roman army and was known not only for his military prowess but for his exceptional compassion, his care for the poor and his gentle treatment of those under his command. He is celebrated for his defeat of a monstrous serpent that was terrorising the city of Heraclea on the Black Sea, which he accomplished through prayer and the sign of the Cross rather than by military might alone. He was arrested for publicly breaking pagan idols in protest against the persecution of Christians and was tortured and crucified before being executed around 319 AD during the reign of Licinius. His feast day is celebrated in February and in June.
