Sophrony, born in Russia and trained originally as an artist before turning toward the spiritual life, became a monk on Mount Athos where he came under the guidance of the elder Silouan, a relationship that would shape the whole of his later theological vision. After years on the Holy Mountain, he eventually settled in England, founding the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Essex, one of the first significant Orthodox monastic communities established in Western Europe in the modern era, drawing both Orthodox and curious Western Christians to its life of prayer. He is remembered above all for preserving and publishing the teachings of his elder Silouan, ensuring that a humble, largely unknown Athonite monk became known to readers throughout the world, and for his own profound theological writing on prayer, personhood, and the experience of divine love. He was formally recognised as a saint in 2019, a recent canonisation that reflects how deeply his witness continues to be felt within contemporary Orthodox life, particularly in the English-speaking world.
