Saint Sophrony of Essex Black Coffee Mug

Saint Sophrony of Essex, the Archimandrite Sophrony Sakharov, is one of the most significant Orthodox spiritual fathers and theologians of the 20th century, beloved throughout the entire Orthodox world as the disciple and biographer of Saint Silouan the Athonite and as the founder of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Tolleshunt Knights, Essex, England. Born Sergei Semyonovich Sakharov in Moscow in 1896, he trained as an artist before pursuing a spiritual search that led him eventually to Mount Athos where he became a monk and disciple of Saint Silouan. After Saint Silouan's repose he preserved and published his writings in the celebrated book Saint Silouan the Athonite, one of the most important Orthodox spiritual texts of the modern era. He later came to England and founded the Essex Monastery which became one of the most important centres of Orthodox spiritual life in the Western world, attracting monks and pilgrims from every nation. He reposed in 1993 and his feast day is celebrated in July.
