Saint Silouan the Athonite Coffee Mug

Saint Silouan the Athonite is one of the greatest saints of the 20th century and one of the most beloved spiritual fathers of the modern Orthodox world, whose teaching on love for enemies and the keeping of the mind in hell without despairing has profoundly shaped the spiritual life of countless Orthodox Christians around the world. Born Semyon Ivanovich Antonov in 1866 in the village of Shovsk in the Tambov region of Russia, he came to Mount Athos in 1892 and spent the remaining forty-six years of his life at the Russian monastery of Saint Panteleimon, living a life of extraordinary prayer, fasting and humility. He received a vision of the living Christ early in his monastic life which became the foundation and reference point of all his subsequent spiritual striving. His spiritual writings were preserved and published by his disciple the Archimandrite Sophrony of Essex and have been translated into dozens of languages. He reposed in October 1938 and was glorified as a saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1987. His feast day is celebrated in October.
