Saint Sergius of Radonezh Coffee Mug

Saint Sergius of Radonezh is the greatest saint of Russia, the heavenly protector of the Russian land and one of the most beloved and venerated saints in the entire Orthodox world. Born Bartholomew Kirillovitch around 1314 in the town of Rostov, he was a devout child who received a miraculous gift of literacy from an elder he encountered in a field. In his youth he retreated with his brother Stephen into the forest of Radonezh where he built a small church and cell and began a life of solitary prayer and extreme asceticism, enduring cold, hunger and demonic attacks. Gradually disciples gathered around him and the community grew into the great Trinity-Sergius Lavra which bears his name and which became the spiritual heart of Russia. He refused the office of Metropolitan of Moscow in his characteristic humility. He blessed the armies of Dmitry Donskoy before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, the decisive victory that began the liberation of Russia from the Mongol yoke. He reposed in October 1392 and his feast day is celebrated on that date and in July.
