Saint Sava of Serbia Coffee Mug

Saint Sava of Serbia is the greatest saint of the Serbian people and one of the most important figures in the entire history of the Orthodox Church. Born around 1175 as the youngest son of the Grand Zhupan Stefan Nemanja, founder of the Nemanjic dynasty, he was given the name Rastko at birth and grew up in wealth and privilege. At the age of seventeen, filled with longing for God, he secretly left the royal court and made his way to Mount Athos where he received the monastic tonsure and the name Sava at the Russian monastery of Saint Panteleimon. He later persuaded his father to join him on Mount Athos, where Stefan Nemanja became the monk Simeon and was glorified as a saint. Together they founded Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. Saint Sava returned to Serbia, founded the autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church in 1219 and became its first Archbishop, establishing monasteries, schools and churches throughout the land. He reposed in Tarnovo, Bulgaria, in 1235 and his feast day is celebrated in January, known as Savinden, one of the most important celebrations in Serbia.
