Saint Procopius the Great Martyr Coffee Mug

Saint Procopius the Great Martyr is one of the most celebrated and widely venerated of all the holy martyrs of the Orthodox Church, honoured as the first martyr of the Diocletianic persecution in Palestine and as a powerful intercessor for all who face persecution and suffering for their faith. Born in Jerusalem with the pagan name Neanias to a pagan father and a secretly Christian mother, he was a young Roman officer sent to Palestine to persecute Christians. On his journey a divine vision appeared to him, similar to the vision of the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus, and he was converted to Christianity, taking the name Procopius. He refused to carry out the persecution of Christians and publicly declared his faith before the governor of Caesarea. He endured prolonged and terrible tortures with extraordinary patience and courage, working miracles during his suffering that converted many of his tormentors and bystanders, before being beheaded around 303 AD. His mother and twelve noblewomen who were converted by witnessing his martyrdom were also put to death. He is particularly venerated in Palestine and throughout the Orthodox world. His feast day is celebrated in July.
