Saint Prince Lazar of Serbia Coffee Mug

Saint Prince Lazar of Serbia, venerated as the Holy New Martyr and Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Lazar Hrebeljanovic, is one of the greatest saints of the Serbian Orthodox Church and a figure of towering importance in Serbian history, faith and national identity. Born around 1329, he was a nobleman who became the leader of the Serbian lands during a period of great danger from the advancing Ottoman Empire. in June 1389, the Feast of Saint Vitus, known as Vidovdan, he led the Serbian army against the vastly superior Ottoman forces of Sultan Murad I at the Battle of Kosovo Polje, the Field of Blackbirds. Both Prince Lazar and Sultan Murad were killed in the battle. Before the battle Lazar is said to have gathered his knights for a Eucharistic liturgy and to have offered them the choice between the earthly kingdom and the heavenly kingdom. The Serbian people chose the heavenly kingdom. Lazar was captured and beheaded and his relics were later glorified by God through miracles. He is venerated as a martyr for the Christian faith and his feast day is celebrated in June, Vidovdan.
