Saint Philip the Apostle Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Philip, a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, was among the earliest disciples to be called by Christ, and the Gospel of John records that it was Philip who, upon being called, hurried at once to find his friend Nathanael and bring him to meet the Lord. He appears again at the feeding of the five thousand, when Christ tested him by asking where bread might be bought to feed the crowd, and once more at the Last Supper, when his earnest request to be shown the Father drew from Christ one of the most direct statements of His own divine identity recorded in the Gospels. Tradition holds that after the Ascension, Philip carried the Gospel into Asia Minor, particularly the region of Phrygia, where he was eventually martyred for his unwavering proclamation of Christ. He is remembered as a disciple whose simple, direct questions often drew forth some of the most profound teachings Christ ever gave.
“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” (John 14:9)
O holy Apostle Philip, who didst ask to see the Father and wast shown the Son, intercede for us, that our own questions in faith may likewise draw us nearer to the truth of Christ. Amen.
