The Holy Apostle and Foremost Peter, Prince of the Apostles, is one of the greatest figures in the entire history of Christianity and the first among the twelve chosen by our Lord Jesus Christ. Born Simon, a fisherman from Bethsaida in Galilee, he was renamed Peter, meaning rock, by Christ himself, who declared upon this rock I will build my Church. He was present at the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, walked on water toward Christ, and was the first apostle to confess Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. Despite his threefold denial of Christ during the Passion, he was restored by the Risen Lord and became the fearless leader of the early Church, preaching at Pentecost and throughout the known world. He was martyred in Rome around 68 AD by crucifixion upside down, considering himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. His feast is celebrated in July together with Saint Paul.
