The Holy Apostle Paul, called the Apostle to the Gentiles and the Thirteenth Apostle, is one of the most extraordinary and transformative figures in the history of Christianity. Born Saul of Tarsus in Cilicia, he was a highly educated Pharisee and zealous persecutor of the early Church before his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, where the Risen Christ appeared to him in blinding light and called him by name. From that moment he devoted every remaining day of his life to preaching the Gospel across the known world, founding churches throughout Asia Minor, Greece and beyond, enduring shipwreck, imprisonment, flogging, stoning and every manner of hardship. He authored fourteen epistles that form a central part of the New Testament and that have shaped Christian theology for two thousand years. He was martyred by beheading in Rome around 67 AD. His feast is celebrated in July together with Saint Peter.
