Saint Panteleimon the Healer Coffee Mug

Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Unmercenary Healer is one of the most beloved and widely venerated saints of the Orthodox Christian Church, honoured throughout the entire Orthodox world as the patron of physicians, healers and all who are sick in body or soul. Born Pantoleon in Nicomedia in the late 3rd century to a pagan father and a Christian mother who died when he was young, he trained as a physician and became skilled in the medical arts. He was brought to faith in Christ by the priest Hermolaus, who showed him that Christ could heal far more effectively than all human medicine. His first miracle as a Christian was the healing of a blind man in the name of Christ. When the Emperor Maximian discovered his faith, he was subjected to extraordinary tortures including being burned, drowned, thrown to wild beasts and stretched on the rack, all of which he endured miraculously unharmed, converting many of his tormentors before finally being beheaded in 305 AD. He is venerated as an unmercenary healer, one who heals without payment, and his intercession is sought by the sick throughout the world. A great monastery on Mount Athos bears his name. His feast day is celebrated in August.

O holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon, most compassionate physician of souls and bodies, who dost heal without payment all who approach thee with faith, intercede before the Lord for all the sick who call upon thee and for all physicians and healers who seek to serve God through the art of medicine.
