Saint Nicholas of Myra, Archbishop of Lycia in Asia Minor, is one of the most universally beloved and venerated saints in the entire Orthodox Christian Church. Born in the 3rd century to a wealthy family in Patara, he gave away his entire inheritance to the poor and devoted his life entirely to God and to the service of others. He is celebrated for his extraordinary compassion, his secret gift-giving to those in need, his fearless defence of the true faith at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD where he stood firmly against the Arian heresy, and his countless miracles both during his earthly life and after his repose. He is the protector of sailors, travellers, children, the poor and the falsely accused. His feast day is celebrated in December, and his relics rest in the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari, Italy.
