Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Bishop of Myra in Lycia, is among the most beloved and universally venerated saints within the whole of the Orthodox Church. Born in the third century to a family of considerable wealth in the city of Patara, he was left an orphan while still young and chose, rather than to keep his inheritance for himself, to give it away entirely to those in need. He was raised to the episcopate and became known throughout the region for a compassion that seemed to know no limit, for his custom of leaving gifts in secret for the poor and the suffering, and for the unshaken courage with which he defended the true faith at the First Ecumenical Council held at Nicaea in the year 325, standing firmly against the teachings of Arius. Many miracles are recorded of him, both during his earthly life and after his repose, and the Church has long honoured him as a protector of sailors, of travellers, of children, of the poor, and of those wrongly accused. His feast is kept each December, and his holy relics rest within the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in the city of Bari, in Italy, where pilgrims continue to come to this day.

O holy father Nicholas, gentle shepherd and secret almsgiver, who didst defend the true faith without fear and didst clothe the poor in the stillness of night, entreat the Lord on behalf of all who call upon thee in their distress, that we too may learn to give freely and to love without seeking praise. Amen.
