Saint Moses lived for years as a violent and feared outlaw in Egypt, leading a band of robbers and known throughout the region for a temper as dangerous as his considerable physical strength, before an unexpected and complete conversion led him to abandon that life entirely and seek out the monks of the Scetis desert. He embraced monastic discipline with the same intensity he had once given to violence, becoming known instead for an extraordinary humility, illustrated by a story still told of him carrying a leaking jug of water on his own back while on his way to sit in judgement of another monk's fault, explaining that his own sins ran out behind him even as he went to examine the faults of another. Ordained to the priesthood later in his monastic life, he met his own death with the same nonviolence his conversion had taught him, refusing to flee or take up arms when raiders attacked his monastery and choosing instead to remain with his brothers, accepting martyrdom rather than return, even briefly, to the violence of his earlier years. He remains one of the most striking examples within the desert tradition of how completely a violent past can be transformed by grace into a life of humility and peace.

O holy Father Moses, who wast transformed from violence to humility and met death itself without resistance, intercede for us, that whatever darkness lies in our own past, we too may be made new by the mercy of Christ. Amen.
