Saint Mercurius Coffee Mug

Saint Mercurius the Great Martyr is one of the most celebrated of the holy military martyrs of the Orthodox Church, venerated throughout the Christian world for his extraordinary courage, the miraculous nature of his martyrdom and his remarkable posthumous miracle connected with the death of the Emperor Julian the Apostate. Born in Cappadocia in the 3rd century, he was a soldier in the Roman army who served with great distinction. Before a decisive battle an angel appeared to him and strengthened his faith, and he fought with miraculous courage and was victorious. When the Emperor Decius demanded that he sacrifice to the pagan gods in thanks for the victory, Mercurius refused and declared his Christian faith openly. He was subjected to terrible tortures and was beheaded around 259 AD. The extraordinary miracle associated with him occurred after his martyrdom when Saint Basil the Great prayed before his icon asking for the death of the apostate Emperor Julian who was persecuting Christians. According to Orthodox tradition the saint's icon was seen to vanish and return with a bloodied spear, and Julian died in battle from a mysterious wound at the same time. His feast day is celebrated in December.
