Saint Matthias the Apostle Coffee Mug

The Holy Apostle Matthias is one of the most remarkable figures in the early Church, chosen by God through the casting of lots to fill the place left vacant by the betrayal and death of Judas Iscariot, becoming the twelfth apostle and completing the number of the chosen witnesses to the Resurrection of Christ. He had been a disciple of the Lord from the very beginning of His public ministry and had witnessed everything from the Baptism of Christ to the Ascension, fulfilling the requirements set forth by Saint Peter before the assembled disciples in the upper room. His election is described in the first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles and represents one of the earliest acts of the Church after the Ascension. After Pentecost he preached the Gospel in Judea, Cappadocia, Ethiopia and other regions. He was martyred around 63 AD. His feast day is celebrated in August.

"The lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles." (Acts 1:26)
