The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, also called Levi, is one of the twelve apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ and the author of the first Gospel in the New Testament. Born in Galilee, he worked as a tax collector in Capernaum, a profession despised by his fellow Jews as a sign of collaboration with the Roman occupiers. When Christ passed by and simply said follow me, Matthew rose immediately and followed Him, leaving behind wealth and security without a moment's hesitation. He then held a great banquet at his home inviting his fellow tax collectors and sinners to meet Jesus, demonstrating from the very beginning his desire to bring others to Christ. His Gospel was written primarily for a Jewish audience and begins with the genealogy of Christ, presenting Him as the fulfilment of all Old Testament prophecy. After Pentecost he preached in Judea, Ethiopia, Macedonia and other lands. His feast day is celebrated in November.
