Saint Mary of Egypt Black Coffee Mug

Saint Mary of Egypt is one of the most remarkable and beloved penitents in the entire history of the Orthodox Church, venerated as the supreme example of the transforming power of God's mercy and the possibility of complete repentance and holiness even after a life of the gravest sin. Born in Egypt around 344 AD, she left her family at twelve and lived in Alexandria for seventeen years in complete moral dissolution and depravity, not for money but driven by an insatiable passion. At the age of twenty-nine she joined a group of pilgrims sailing to Jerusalem for the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. When she attempted to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with the other pilgrims an invisible force prevented her from crossing the threshold. Struck with sudden awareness of her unworthiness, she fell to the ground in tears before an icon of the Theotokos and prayed with her whole heart. The way was then opened to her and she heard a voice directing her across the Jordan. She spent the remaining forty-seven years of her life alone in the desert in total repentance and prayer, and was discovered by the monk Zosimas who gave her Communion before her repose. Her feast day is celebrated in April and on the fifth Sunday of Great Lent.

O holy venerable Mary of Egypt, supreme model of repentance and living proof of the boundless mercy of God, intercede before the Lord for all who have fallen into serious sin and who despair of God's forgiveness, and show them as thou wast shown that no sin is beyond the reach of divine mercy.
