The Holy Myrrhbearer and Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene is one of the most beloved and significant women in the entire history of Christianity and the first witness of the Resurrection of Christ. From the town of Magdala on the Sea of Galilee, she was healed by our Lord of seven demons and from that moment followed Him faithfully throughout His public ministry. She stood at the foot of the Cross when most of the disciples had fled, she was present at the burial of Christ, and she was the very first person to whom the Risen Lord appeared on the morning of His Resurrection, commissioning her to announce the good news to the apostles. For this reason she is called the Apostle to the Apostles. According to Orthodox tradition she later travelled to Rome, where she presented a red egg to the Emperor Tiberius proclaiming Christ is Risen, the origin of the Orthodox tradition of red Paschal eggs. Her feast day is celebrated in August.
