Saint Mary Magdalene, delivered by Christ from a grievous affliction described in the Gospels as possession by seven demons, became one of His most devoted followers, accompanying Him throughout His ministry and remaining present even at the Cross when many of the male disciples had fled in fear. She was among the women who came to the tomb on the morning of the Resurrection bearing spices to anoint His body, only to find the tomb empty, and it was to her alone that the risen Christ first appeared, entrusting her with the task of carrying the news to the other apostles before any of them had yet seen Him themselves. For this reason the Church has long honoured her with the title Equal to the Apostles, recognising in her the very first witness and herald of the Resurrection, the central event upon which the entire Christian faith rests. Tradition holds that she later travelled and preached the Gospel before her eventual repose, remembered above all as proof that deep transformation and the highest honour are never out of reach for any soul Christ has touched.

“Jesus saith unto her, Mary... Go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father.” (John 20:16-17)
