Saint Macarius the Great of Egypt, also known as Macarius the Elder, is one of the greatest Desert Fathers and one of the most celebrated saints of early Christian monasticism, venerated throughout the Orthodox world for his extraordinary holiness, his gift of discernment, his boundless humility and the depth of his spiritual teaching preserved in the Macarian Homilies. Born around 300 AD in Egypt, he withdrew to the desert of Scetis in his early thirties and lived there as a monk and priest for sixty years, becoming one of the greatest spiritual fathers of the Egyptian desert alongside Saints Anthony and Pachomius. He was renowned for receiving all who came to him with complete love and without judgement, for his gift of seeing into hearts and for the extraordinary depth of his teaching on the prayer of the heart and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the soul that seeks God. Among the many stories preserved of him is his encounter with a skull in the desert that spoke to him of the condition of souls in Hades. He reposed around 390 AD and his feast day is celebrated in February.
