Saint Luke the Surgeon of Crimea Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Luke, born Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky in the late nineteenth century, trained and practised as a skilled surgeon before later being ordained to the priesthood and eventually consecrated a bishop, continuing his medical work even as he took on the responsibilities of pastoral leadership. During the Soviet period, he endured repeated arrest, interrogation, and exile to remote regions on account of his open profession of Christian faith, yet even in exile he continued to perform surgery and write medical textbooks that remained in use within Soviet medical education for years afterward. He was later honoured by the state itself for his medical contributions during the Second World War, even as the same authorities continued to regard his religious convictions with suspicion, an unusual position that reflected both his irreplaceable medical skill and his unshakeable faith. He is venerated both as a confessor who suffered for the faith under persecution and as a beloved intercessor for the sick, his relics drawing pilgrims from across Russia and beyond.

O holy Confessor and Healer Luke, who didst serve both as physician and as bishop even under persecution, intercede for us, that we may serve God faithfully whatever opposition we may face. Amen.
