Saint King Milutin Coffee Mug
Saint King Milutin, venerated in the Serbian Orthodox Church as the Holy King Stefan Uros II Milutin, is one of the most celebrated and beloved saint-kings of medieval Serbia, honoured for his extraordinary building of churches and monasteries throughout the Balkans and for his deep, if complex, personal piety. Born around 1253, he reigned as King of Serbia from 1282 to 1321 and presided over one of the greatest periods of Serbian political power and Orthodox cultural achievement. During his reign he is credited with building and restoring over forty churches and monasteries, including the magnificent Gracanica Monastery in Kosovo, considered one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in the world, and the Hilandar Katholikon on Mount Athos. He maintained close relations with the Byzantine Empire and with the Orthodox patriarchates and was a generous patron of Orthodox Christian culture and art. He reposed in 1321 and was glorified as a saint by the Serbian Orthodox Church. His feast day is celebrated in November.
"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain." (Psalm 127:1)
O holy King Milutin, great builder of churches and patron of the Orthodox faith in Serbia, who didst adorn the land with sacred temples as a crown of glory to God, intercede before the Lord for the Serbian people and for the preservation of the holy churches thou didst build. Amen.
