Saint Jude Thaddeus the Apostle Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Jude, also known as Thaddeus and sometimes identified as Lebbaeus within the Gospel accounts, is remembered for a single recorded question at the Last Supper, asking Christ why He would reveal Himself to the disciples and not to the whole world, a question that drew from Christ a profound teaching on love and obedience as the conditions for divine self-revelation. He is traditionally held to be the author of the short Epistle of Jude found within the New Testament, a letter urging the faithful to remain steadfast in the apostolic faith against those who would distort it. Tradition holds that following the Ascension, Jude carried the Gospel to Mesopotamia and Persia, often in the company of the Apostle Simon the Zealot, and that the two were eventually martyred together for their unwavering proclamation of Christ. He has long been venerated by the faithful as a powerful intercessor in situations that seem hopeless or near to despair.
“Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?” (John 14:22)
O holy Apostle Jude, intercessor in hopeless causes, who didst ask how Christ would reveal Himself to those who love Him, intercede for us in our own hour of need, that we may know His presence even when all seems lost. Amen.
