The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, beloved disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ, is one of the greatest saints in all of Orthodox Christianity and the author of the Fourth Gospel, three Epistles and the Book of Revelation. Born in Galilee to the fisherman Zebedee and his wife Salome, he was called alongside his brother James while mending nets. He was the youngest of the twelve apostles and the most beloved by Christ, reclining at the Last Supper on the Lord's breast. He was the only apostle to stand at the foot of the Cross throughout the entire Crucifixion, and it was to him that our Lord entrusted the care of His Most Holy Mother. He outlived all the other apostles, dying peacefully in extreme old age in Ephesus, making him the only apostle not to die a martyr's death in the usual sense. His Gospel opens with the most profound theological statement in all of Scripture. His feast days are celebrated in May and October.
