Saint John of Shanghai Coffee Mug

Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco, the Archbishop John Maximovitch, is one of the most extraordinary and beloved saints of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia and one of the greatest wonder-workers of the 20th century, venerated throughout the entire Orthodox world for his superhuman asceticism, his miraculous gifts and his boundless love for every person he encountered. Born Mikhail Borisovich Maximovitch in 1896 in Adamovka in the Kharkov region of Ukraine, he became a monk and bishop and served the Russian diaspora in China, the Philippines, Western Europe and finally San Francisco. He was renowned for his complete sleeplessness, spending his nights in prayer before the icons, for his practice of visiting the sick in hospitals at all hours, and for his humble, almost dishevelled appearance that concealed the greatest holiness. He guided thousands of Russian refugees to safety and freedom. He reposed in July 1966 in Seattle and his incorrupt relics rest in San Francisco. He was glorified as a saint in 1994 and his feast day is celebrated in July.
