Saint John of Damascus, known in the Arabic tradition as Yuhanna ibn Mansur and venerated in some communities as Saint John of Damascus, is one of the greatest theologians and hymnographers of the Orthodox Christian Church. Born around 675 AD in Damascus to a prominent Christian Arab family, he served in the court of the Umayyad Caliph before withdrawing to the monastery of Mar Saba near Jerusalem to devote himself entirely to theology, prayer and writing. He is the great defender of the veneration of holy icons, writing three brilliant treatises against the iconoclast heresy at a time when it was dangerous to do so. He is also the composer of the Paschal Canon, one of the most glorious hymns in all of Orthodox worship, and the author of the Fount of Knowledge, one of the most important theological works in Christian history. His feast day is celebrated in December.
