Saint James Son of Zebedee Framed Canvas Icon
Saint James, son of Zebedee and elder brother of Saint John the Evangelist, was among the first disciples called by Christ beside the Sea of Galilee, where the two brothers left their father's fishing boat to follow Him without hesitation. Together with Peter and his own brother John, James belonged to the innermost circle of the Twelve, present at the Transfiguration upon Mount Tabor and at Christ's agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, witnessing moments of glory and of anguish that the other apostles did not see. He and his brother were given by Christ the name Boanerges, meaning Sons of Thunder, suggesting a fervent and forceful temperament that was gradually tempered through years of discipleship. James became the first of the Twelve Apostles to suffer martyrdom, put to death by the sword on the order of King Herod Agrippa, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, sealing with his blood the faith he had once left his nets to follow.
“And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.” (Acts 12:2)
O holy Apostle James, who didst leave all things to follow Christ and didst seal thy faith with martyrdom, intercede for us, that we too may follow the Lord without looking back. Amen.
