The Holy Apostle James, son of Zebedee and brother of Saint John the Evangelist, is one of the most prominent of the twelve apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. Born in Galilee to a family of fishermen, he was called by Christ alongside his brother John while they were mending their nets with their father. Christ gave both brothers the surname Boanerges, meaning Sons of Thunder, reflecting their zealous and fiery nature. James was among the innermost circle of three apostles, alongside Peter and John, who were present at the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and in the Garden of Gethsemane during Christ's agony before the Passion. He was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, beheaded by King Herod Agrippa in Jerusalem around 44 AD. He is venerated as the patron saint of Spain, where according to tradition his relics were miraculously translated. His feast day is celebrated in May.
