Saint James Son of Alphaeus Black Coffee Mug
The Holy Apostle James, son of Alphaeus, is one of the twelve apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, venerated in the Orthodox Church as James the Less to distinguish him from James the son of Zebedee. He is identified in Orthodox tradition with James the brother of the Lord, the first Bishop of Jerusalem and the author of the Epistle of James in the New Testament, one of the most practical and searching letters in all of Scripture. As Bishop of Jerusalem he led the first Council of the Church described in Acts 15, presiding over the deliberations with great wisdom. He was renowned for his extraordinary piety, spending so much time in prayer that his knees became hardened like a camel's. He was martyred in Jerusalem around 62 AD, thrown from the pinnacle of the Temple and then beaten to death, forgiving his killers as he died. His feast day is celebrated in October.
"Faith without works is dead." (James 2:26)
O holy Apostle James, son of Alphaeus and first bishop of Jerusalem, whose life of prayer and righteous works shone as a light in the holy city, intercede before the Lord for all who seek to unite living faith with works of love and mercy. Amen.
