Saint Ivan Rilski Coffee Mug
Saint John of Rila, known in Bulgarian as Ivan Rilski, is the greatest saint and patron of Bulgaria and one of the most venerated ascetics of the Orthodox world. Born around 876 AD in the village of Skrino in present-day Bulgaria, he retreated from the world at a young age to seek God in solitude and prayer. He lived as a hermit in the mountains of the Rila range for many decades, enduring extreme hardship, fasting and prayer, and becoming a father to many disciples who gathered around him seeking guidance. He reposed in 946 AD and his relics were later transferred with great ceremony to Sofia and then to the Rila Monastery which bears his name and which he founded. He is the heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people and his feast day is celebrated in November.
"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers." (Psalm 1:1)
O venerable Father John of Rila, great ascetic and protector of Bulgaria, who through fasting and prayer didst attain the heights of holiness, intercede before the Lord for all who venerate thy holy memory and seek to follow the path of repentance. Amen.
