Saint Irene Chrysovalantou Black Coffee Mug

Saint Irene of Chrysovalantou is one of the most remarkable and beloved ascetic saints of the Byzantine Orthodox Church, venerated for her extraordinary holiness, her gifts of healing and clairvoyance and the miraculous signs that accompanied her life and have continued after her repose. Born in Cappadocia in the 9th century to a noble family, she came to Constantinople as a candidate to be the bride of the Emperor Michael III but when she arrived and learned that another woman had already been chosen she received this disappointment with complete peace and entered the Chrysovalantou Convent in Constantinople where she lived as a nun for the rest of her life. She became the abbess of the convent and led her sisters with great wisdom and love while herself pursuing a life of extreme asceticism, spending whole nights in prayer and subsisting on the most meagre food. She received the gift of levitation during prayer, was visited by the Archangel Michael and worked many miracles during her lifetime. Her relics were brought to the island of Aegina and have worked miracles there. She reposed in 921 AD and her feast day is celebrated in August.
