Saint Herman of Alaska Coffee Mug

Sale price£23.00

Saint Herman of Alaska is the first canonised saint of North America and one of the most beloved saints of the Orthodox Church in the Americas. Born in Russia around 1756, he was a monk of Valaam Monastery before joining the first Orthodox missionary expedition to Alaska in 1794. He spent the rest of his long life, over four decades, on Spruce Island near Kodiak, Alaska, which he named New Valaam. He devoted himself entirely to the care and protection of the indigenous Alaskan people, defending them against exploitation and abuse by Russian colonial merchants, teaching them, caring for the sick and orphaned, and praying ceaselessly. He was glorified as a saint in 1970 and his feast day is celebrated in August and December. He is the patron saint of the Orthodox Church in America.

"From this day, from this hour, from this moment, let us love God above all." (Saint Herman of Alaska)

O venerable Father Herman, wonderworker of Alaska and enlightener of America, who didst labour in love for the forgotten and the vulnerable, intercede before the Lord for all who seek to serve God through service to others. Amen.

This mug makes a deeply meaningful gift for baptisms, name days, feast days, Easter, Christmas or any occasion where the missionary spirit and love of the Orthodox saints is honoured.
