Saint Herman of Alaska Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Herman travelled in 1794 as part of one of the earliest Russian Orthodox missions sent to evangelize the native peoples of Alaska, then a remote outpost of the Russian Empire populated chiefly by Aleut and other indigenous communities largely unfamiliar with Christianity. He lived among the native Alaskans with evident humility and simplicity, learning their language and customs and establishing a small school and orphanage on Spruce Island, while also becoming a tireless and outspoken defender of the indigenous people against the exploitation and mistreatment inflicted upon them by Russian fur trading interests of the day. Deeply loved by those he served, he was credited during his lifetime with gifts of healing and prophetic insight, and he continued his quiet ministry of prayer and practical care for decades, remaining in Alaska until his death rather than returning to the comforts of his homeland. He was canonised in 1970 as the first saint of the Orthodox Church to be formally recognised from within North America, and he remains venerated as a wonderworker and protector of the whole of the American continent.

O holy Father Herman, who didst defend the poor and the powerless among those entrusted to thy care, intercede for us, that we too may speak up for those who have no voice of their own. Amen.
