The Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Empress Helen, mother of the Emperor Constantine the Great, is venerated throughout the Orthodox Christian world as one of the most important women in the history of the Church. Born around 248 AD in Drepanum in Bithynia, she became the mother of Constantine who would go on to make Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire. In her old age, around 326 AD, she undertook a famous pilgrimage to the Holy Land where she oversaw excavations in Jerusalem and discovered the True Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, buried beneath a pagan temple. She also discovered the crosses of the two thieves crucified alongside Christ and identified the True Cross by a miracle of healing. She built the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. She is venerated as the finder of the Holy Cross and her feast day is celebrated in June together with her son Saint Constantine.
