Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy-bearer is one of the most celebrated and beloved saints of the Orthodox Christian Church, venerated across the entire Christian world. Born in Cappadocia in the 3rd century to a Christian family, George served as a soldier in the Roman army and rose to high rank before openly declaring his faith when the Emperor Diocletian issued his great persecution of Christians. He gave away all his possessions to the poor and presented himself before the Emperor to protest the persecution of his fellow Christians. He endured extraordinary and prolonged tortures with unwavering courage and faith before his martyrdom in 303 AD. He is venerated as the patron saint of England, Georgia, Serbia and Ethiopia among many other nations. His feast day is celebrated in May.
