Saint Gabriel of Georgia Coffee Mug

Saint Gabriel of Georgia, also known as Blessed Gabriel Urgebadze, is one of the most beloved and remarkable saints of the modern Georgian Orthodox Church, glorified in 2012 and already venerated by millions of Orthodox Christians around the world for his extraordinary holiness, his courageous witness under Soviet persecution and his wonderful gift of clairvoyance and spiritual counsel. Born Goderdzi Urgebadze in 1929 in Tbilisi, Georgia, he became a monk and hieromonk and served during the darkest years of Soviet atheist persecution of the Church. In 1965 on the Soviet May Day celebration he publicly burned a large portrait of Lenin on the central square of Tbilisi in protest against the persecution of Christians, an act for which he was imprisoned and subjected to psychiatric abuse. He endured all with patience and forgiveness. After his release he lived as a fool-for-Christ and as a beloved spiritual father, receiving thousands who came to him for counsel and prayer. He reposed in 1995 and his feast day is celebrated in November.
