Saint Fanourios Black Coffee Mug

Saint Fanourios the Great Martyr is one of the most beloved and popular saints of the Greek Orthodox Church, venerated throughout the Orthodox world with particular warmth and devotion for his powerful intercession in finding lost things, lost people and lost causes, and for his readiness to reveal himself to those who call upon him with faith. His icon was discovered around 1355 in the ruins of an ancient church in Rhodes, when the city walls were being rebuilt after a long period of Arab occupation. The icon depicted a young soldier saint holding a cross and a candle being tortured in various ways, but his name was unknown and the Archbishop of Rhodes, together with the assembled clergy and faithful, prayed for revelation of the saint's identity, whereupon his name Fanourios, meaning he who reveals or makes manifest, was made known. Since that time he has been venerated as the patron of those who have lost something precious, whether a possession, a person, a direction in life or a sense of God's presence. A special bread called Fanouropita is traditionally baked in his honour. His feast day is celebrated in September.
