Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri Black Coffee Mug

Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri is one of the most beloved and recently glorified saints of the Greek Orthodox Church, whose discovery and glorification in the late 20th century represents one of the most remarkable events in modern Orthodox history. Born Efstratios Morfopoulos in 1384 in Trikala, Thessaly, he became a monk at the Monastery of the Annunciation on Marathon Bay in Attica at a young age and lived a life of extraordinary asceticism and prayer. He was martyred by Ottoman raiders in 1426 after enduring prolonged and terrible tortures with great patience and forgiveness, crucified on a mulberry tree before finally being killed with an iron bar. His body was buried secretly at the monastery and forgotten. In 1950 the Abbess of the monastery received visions directing her to a specific location where the saint's relics were found, and from that moment miraculous healings began occurring in great numbers, attracting pilgrims from across Greece. He was officially glorified as a saint in 1998. His feast day is celebrated in May and January.
