The Holy Prophet Elijah, known in the Orthodox Church as Elijah the Tishbite, is one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament and one of the most venerated saints in all of Orthodox Christianity. Living in Israel in the 9th century BC during the reign of the wicked King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, Elijah stood alone and fearlessly against the worship of Baal and called the people back to the one true God. He called down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel to confound the prophets of Baal, raised the dead, and was taken up bodily into heaven in a chariot of fire without tasting death, making him one of only two men in Scripture to be so translated. He appeared alongside Moses at the Transfiguration of our Lord on Mount Tabor. His feast day is celebrated in August and he is venerated as the forerunner of the second coming of Christ.
