Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos Coffee Mug

Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos is the patron saint and most beloved protector of the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, venerated throughout the Greek Orthodox world for his extraordinary holiness, his remarkable act of forgiveness toward his own brother's murderer and the countless miracles worked through his incorrupt relics which rest to this day in the Church of Saint Dionysios in Zakynthos town. Born Draganigos Sigouros in 1547 into a noble family on Zakynthos, he became a monk and later Archbishop of Aegina and Hydra before retiring to a monastery on his beloved island. The most celebrated story of his life concerns the murderer of his own brother who came to him in hiding seeking shelter. Saint Dionysios, recognising him, sheltered and hid him, giving him the opportunity to escape, choosing forgiveness over vengeance in a manner that moved all who heard of it. He reposed in 1622 and his body was found incorrupt, a sign of divine glorification. His relics are carried in solemn procession through Zakynthos twice a year. His feast day is celebrated in December and September.
