Saint Demetrios the Myrrh-Streaming Coffee Mug

Saint Demetrios the Great Martyr and Myrrh-streaming is one of the most beloved and widely venerated military martyrs of the Orthodox Church, celebrated throughout the entire Orthodox world and with particular devotion in Greece, Serbia and throughout the Balkans where he is venerated as a great protector and patron. Born in Thessaloniki in Macedonia around 270 AD to a Christian family of senatorial rank, he was appointed by the Emperor Maximian as governor of Thessaly and proconsul charged with the extermination of Christianity in the region. Instead he openly declared his own Christian faith and began teaching and preaching, greatly increasing the number of Christians in Thessaloniki. He was arrested and imprisoned in the baths of the city. During his imprisonment a young Christian athlete named Nestor sought his blessing before entering combat against the pagan champion Lyaeus, and through Demetrios's prayer Nestor triumphed and killed the champion. Demetrios was then put to death by being stabbed with spears around 306 AD. From his relics a miraculous myrrh has flowed without ceasing, giving him the title Myrrh-streaming. His feast day is celebrated in November, one of the most important feasts of the Orthodox year.
